Perseverance is a key quality in law enforcement resilience and it is also a very helpful quality in police fitness training.

What is resilience?
Resilience is defined as the ability to bounce back from adversity, being elastic and having the capability to endure hardships.

Resilience is what we in law enforcement have to strive for in order to survive our careers with a sound mind, body and spirit.  It is what we need to be able to muster to be able to function well enough to enjoy many more happy and productive years after retirement from the job.

At CopsAlive.com we promoted the concept of Tactical Resilience which is a set of comprehensive wellness systems layered over each other, and working in concert, to build a healthy and effective law enforcement people and organizations.

The concept of tactical resilience is about creating effective wellness tactics that combine to develop efficient habits, that in turn construct superior survival, and performance, systems which promote healthy, competent and professional law enforcement officers.   One of those individual wellness tactics is the ability to persevere.  As in the old saying: “When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going!”.

Our CopsAlive Fitness recommendation is for you to find the mental toughness needed to… Continue reading

Make It Safe

Today CopsAlive.com is pleased to announce Police Psychologist Jack Digliani’s newly developed “Make it Safe” Police Officer Initiative. The Initiative is comprised of 12 primary components designed to reduce the secondary danger of policing.

What do we have to do to Make It Safe for police officers to trust one another enough to be able to ask for help when they need it? What do we have to do to our law enforcement culture to make seeking mental health support for stress related issues okay?

How can we truly walk our talk enough to really have each others back and really “take care of our own?”

You can start “Make It Safe” in your agency by distributing and discussing this initiative. We must all work to make it safe for officers to ask for psychological support.

What is the Make it Safe Police Officer Initiative?

The Make it Safe Initiative is a concerted effort to… Continue reading

Fitness Monday – The Power of a Mentor

In law enforcement fitness a mentor can be one of your most effective tools to getting in shape and staying that way.

Our CopsAlive Fitness recommendation for this week is find a mentor to help you with your fitness. As you have read in the past few weeks Scott has asked Lt. Kim Lane to help him with his nutritional planning and Rae has been receiving advice from April Lea Gellatly a professional Triathlete & Atlanta-based Fitness Professional for CNNFitNation & a USATriathlon Certified Coach.

Mentoring is a relationship between two people where the more experienced, or more knowledgeable, person guides the less experienced or knowledgeable person as part of a personal developmental process. That process whether it is formal or informal is used for the relaying of knowledge, wisdom and support.

Mentoring is becoming much more common in many areas of business, commerce and even law enforcement. In the areas of health and fitness mentoring can be very effective in keeping you on track and guiding you based upon your mentor’s experience. It gives you support and encouragement and helps you get through those tough times when you want to quit.

Obviously, the more advanced version… Continue reading

Is it Time to Check Under Your Hood?

Recently, I had my biennial physical check up with my primary care physician. For me, it is like the scheduled maintenance on our vehicles. It something we should look forward to doing every year or as my HMO offers: every other year. The check-up is to ensure our bodies are running smoothly.

As I admitted in previous articles, I reached the Golden anniversary of my birth recently so my physician was very thorough with his check list of my body parts, equipment and the engine (my heart). Everything appears in order and we always have a great conversation about diets, exercise and my job performance as a law enforcement officer. I’ve been very… Continue reading

Scott Silverii’s “I’m Shaping Up; Week 7”

213, 137, 99 – HIKE! While losing a healthy level of fitness is not a game, it is fun and challenging to develop creative ways to regain it.

Racquetball, stadiums, dodge ball(?) Yep. Actually I watched.

I have mostly maintained strict adherence to Lt. Lane’s diet plan, but when the Kiddo is asking for his traditional Thursday night out at his favorite pizza place, I did have part of a child’s pepperoni. Of course, I’m not the reigning Ms. Louisiana like Kim is, so I ate it without guilt.

Back to the fun parts. Those huddle numbers are my weight, and BP. I’m stoked to see my… Continue reading

From Buddha to the Blue Line

Editors Note: The following guest article was provided by Max Lewis who works in Child Protective Services for the State of Oregon Department of Human Services. I think you will find this article very enlightening and I encourage you to learn more through the resources he mentions at the end of the article.

Anger is a killing thing: it kills the man who angers, for each rage leaves him less than he had been before. It takes something from himLouis L’Amour

About twenty miles West of Portland, Oregon lays Hillsboro. A city of about 91,000 people it has a unique mix of urban, suburban and rural landscapes typical of towns that greet travelers heading West towards the coast from Portland. Agricultural and other signs of rural of commerce blend seamlessly among signs of contemporary life like mass transit and a small but distinct downtown. Lattice Semiconductors and the software giant Intel both have a large presence in the city as well. Though not far from Portland it is a city of extremes. In the fall rain pours violently, in early winter thick fog hovers over the landscape and in later months snow can pile up quickly. In summer the Sun beats down on the flat city absent even the slightest breeze to offer relief and temperatures can hover in the 90’s for days. It is in this unique city’s Police Department that a Lieutenant is trying to implement the concepts of Mindfulness to the benefit of his Officers in the field.

Lieutenant Richard Goerling exudes the erect and deliberate demeanor of a life long military man. Twenty years in… Continue reading

Preparing for a Line of Duty Death

honoringthedeadwhoservedbyrandysonofrobertAt CopsAlive.com we focus on helping policing professionals survive this law enforcement career, but line of duty death is a reality we must prepare for in this profession. It is not so much a question of if it will happen within your department but rather when it will happen. Law enforcement line of duty death is also something that we don’t like to think about but if you don’t do some planning in advance, and prepare for, the likelihood you will be caught off guard and the trauma to you agency and it’s people will be even greater.

I recently had a chance to see firsthand the Honor Guard training provided by DFL Honor Guard out of Indiana. Their training is first rate and gives students all the tools needed to prepare themselves and your agency for the sad duty of saying goodbye to one of your own. If it must happen, it should be handled with dignity and honor and that’s what DFL teaches.

In May of 2013 the The Michigan Sheriff’s Association and the Michigan Chiefs of Police, two leading law enforcement organizations, have joined forces to form the Sheriff’s & Municipal Memorial Assistance Response Team (SMMART) and are sponsoring a DFL Honor Guard Training program in Alpena Michigan.  I would highly recommend that you send your existing or new honor guard to this training if you can.  Here are the details Continue reading

Shaping Up!

Awesome Monday to all & it’s time to change the weekly title of this positive effort. I’m Shaping Up is just what it describes. I’ve been blessed to gain encouragement, training and diet support needed to launch a sensible approach to regaining my fitness.

Last week I introduced you to Lt. Kim Lane of the Thibodaux Police Department who volunteered to help with a diet that I could understand and most importantly; follow. It’s been a solid week and I have not strayed from this diet! If you can only imagine how much I love late-night ice cream, you would truly be impressed with this nutritional accomplishment.

Eating 5 to 6 times per day, I’ve yet to become… Continue reading

1st Responder Treatment

Our law enforcement profession is very slow to embrace the need for early intervention and support of those who need help before they turn to self-medication with alcohol and prescription medications. There is a new treatment program available that is geared specifically for Police, Fire and EMS first responders and it’s called 1st Responder Treatment.

I had a chance to interview Mark Lamplugh the Founder and Program Coordinator of 1st Responder Treatment a partner with Transformations Treatment Center in Delray Beach Florida.

Mark founded 1st Responder Treatment to help first responders get drug and alcohol treatment nationwide. First Responders have special needs when it comes to treatment. Mark was a fire captain who struggled with addiction himself, so he understands the needs that must be met.

The mission of 1st Responder Treatment is to assist every first responder to get the help they need for their addiction issues while also protecting their privacy.

In our interview we discussed the challenges in getting police officers or any first responders to ask for help when they have a problem with alcohol, drugs or stress.

Our discussion was directed at two audiences. One audience includes the first responders that have an alcohol or drug problem and the other audience was the peer, friend or family member of the police officer or other first responder that knows someone who needs help.

In our interview… Continue reading
