When Enough is Enough?

I can think of so my topics to write about using this title but in honor of George Carlin I’m going to write about “stuff”. Check out George’s thoughts on “Stuff”.

These thoughts struck me as we are thinking about moving into a new home and have way too much stuff, which is what I worked hard for as a cop for over twenty years. When’s Your Independence Day?

Yesterday the United States celebrated it’s Independence Day.  Many countries celebrate such a day to denote their coming of age and independence from the input and control of another’s influence.  Not many people celebrate such a day for their life but maybe we should.

What in your life do you NEED to become independent from?  A mortgage?  A bad relationship?  A job?  An unhealthy lifestyle?  What would financial independence look like for you?  What would freedom look like to you?  CopsAlive is built upon the premise that we should have a plan to survive and thrive in life and in our job.  What’s your plan? Fun, Fun, Fun!

That sure describes our policing profession doesn’t it? How many of you really got into law enforcement just for the fun of it? I know, I know, you told the interview panel that all you really wanted to do was to “help people”, and when you became a cop, you did but admit it, you were looking for fun.

The big question might be “Is it still fun?” Did all the fun and excitement that got you into police work linger or has it passed? Are the thrills still there or are you having to create then now? Most importantly, what do you do for fun and relaxation off the job?

With stress probably being the culprit behind most police officer deaths, certainly after retirement, what are you doing to minimize that stress now and how are you relaxing? Also of importance is how healthy is your means of having fun? Continue reading
