Editors Note: Laurie has been a good friend of CopsAlive.com for many years and in fact we interviewed her in July 2009 about the “5 Critical Concepts You Must Know to Start a Business” and her interview was met with such an outstanding response that we have asked her to become a regular contributor on CopsAlive.com for issues related to the successful operation of a business. Why is that important to me as a police officer you ask? We believe that one way to successfully navigate this very toxic career in law enforcement is to always have a back-up plan. One very effective back-up plan for cops is to start your own business while you are still working and grow it into an successful money maker so that if you ever need to, or want to, retire it will be there to protect you.
If you are a law enforcement professional and are running your own business and you think you need to spend more money on marketing, or to hire a sales person, or to buy the latest and greatness gadget for your business, I have some advice for you. STOP!
As a police officer or other law enforcement officer I know that having a financial back-up plan is important to you and starting or… Continue reading
I came across E.L. Forestal while posting some CopsAlive information on the social network Twitter (visit us at www.Twitter.com/copsalive) and noticed that he has several internet businesses running and he is a working police officer. I contacted him and learned that he is an eight year veteran of the Kokomo Police Department in Indiana and because of so many requests from his friends about how to become a police officer he created two training programs about how to pass the police exam and how to succeed in a police oral-board interview. Also because of his sports background he has created an online fitness program called “Fit with a Cop”.
I am always looking for officers with a “back-up” plan to provide extra income and insurance against working in patrol until you are 65 years old and Forestal told me that… Continue reading
CopsAlive was on the wrong side of a phishing trip two weeks ago when we were hacked by a phishing scheme that used our server to host a false web page for a well known bank. It is believed that the hackers were trying to collect personal information from customers of that bank and used our domain to hide their scheme. Then yesterday we were hacked by a group that make a game of taking over sites and leaving nasty messages in place of the actual site. We’ve learned a few things from all this albeit the hard way. Let us share some tips for you. Continue reading
I recently had the opportunity to interview a police officer who really has planned for success in his life and his career.
Chuck Rylant began his law enforcement career in 1998 with the Lompoc Police Department in California. During those four years, he worked in a patrol car and later as a field training officer. While working graveyards on patrol, he chipped away at his bachelor degree by taking one class at a time. Looking back, he can remember struggling to stay awake while doing homework between 3:00 AM – 6:00 AM when there were only a few calls during his patrol shift. Unfortunately, he went through a divorce and had to put off finishing college for a couple of years while he got his “life in order”. Continue reading

Are you moonlighting or working a second job? I don’t know many cops who don’t. It seems like we are always searching for something more. Maybe we want to earn a little extra cash or socialize with the people or maybe we need that extra cash. How much of your earnings from any side jobs you work are you actually investing or even saving?
Earning extra cash is nothing new in this world and with the economy in the U.S. the way it is, it seems like those extra earnings are the only way that many people are even getting by with their bills. It seems that when your primary job is peace officer or law enforcement of any kind that it shouldn’t have to be that way but it is. Continue reading
