Basic Law Enforcement Wellness Curriculum Development

Help us develop a basic curriculum on law enforcement wellness

The current version of the Basic LE Wellness Curriculum can always be found here: https://www.copsalive.com/wellnesscurriculum/

As part of the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association (ILEETA) annual conference being held the last week of March 2014 in Chicago Illinois, several of us are facilitating sessions at the conference in an attempt to develop a Basic Wellness Training Curriculum to be available to everyone in law enforcement.

At the conference, being held at the Chicago Westin Yorktown Center, we will host four breakout sessions and one group panel discussion to draw ideas and create a basic curriculum for future distribution.

In addition to the input from hundreds of ILEETA members we also need your input. We want your ideas, tips, best practices, research and any input that you believe would be helpful or should be included within a basic training program on wellness for law enforcement professionals.

There are several ways to help.

First, you could… attend, or drop in for a day as a guest, at the ILEETA conference March 24-29, 2014 at the Westin Yorktown Center Hotel located in Lombard, Illinois where we will be facilitating several group discussions on this subject.

The two sessions being repeated at the ILEETA conference are:
Topic: Emotional Wellness
Title: New Frontiers in Law Enforcement Emotional Wellness
Facilitators: John Marx & “Coach” Robert Lindsey
Monday March 24th from 0800-0945 hrs. and Thursday March 27th from 1315-1500 hrs.

and

Topic: Physical Wellness
Title: Law Enforcement Physical Fitness: Don’t Cop Out
Facilitators: Mark St. Hilaire & Mark Sherwood
Monday March 24th from 1000-1145 hrs. and Thursday March 27th from 1515-1700 hrs.

Second, you could send me your input directly:

The primary purpose of these two 2014 ILEETA Sessions is to create a basic law enforcement wellness curriculum to be made available to any law enforcement agency for the purpose of instilling wellness practices within that agency.

This program is being presented as part of a project to create a Basic Police Wellness Curriculum. There will also be a panel discussion Thursday evening March 27th at 7PM designed to give ILEETA members final input into the basic law enforcement wellness curriculum that will be developed. Throughout the conference four sessions will be held to cull suggestions, ideas, tips and best practices in both physical and emotional wellness. The input sessions to be held on Monday and Thursday are entitled “New Frontiers in Law Enforcement Emotional Wellness” and “Law Enforcement Physical Fitness: Don’t Cop Out”.

In the panel discussion John Marx, Mark St. Hilaire, Coach Robert Lindsey, and Mark Sherwood will discuss their findings and open the floor for final discussions about what should be included in the development of a basic wellness curriculum for law enforcement personnel. The final curriculum will be published, and made available to all law enforcement agencies on www.CopsAlive.com, following the conference.

At The Law Enforcement Survival Institute (LESI) we train law enforcement officers to cope with stress and manage all the toxic effects and hidden dangers of a career in law enforcement.

Our “Armor Your Self™: How to Survive a Career in Law Enforcement” on-site training program is an eight hour, hands-on, “How to” seminar that helps police officers and other law enforcement professionals armor themselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to survive their careers in police work. The concept of “True Blue Valor™” is where one law enforcement officer has to muster the courage to confront a peer who is slipping both professionally and personally and endangering themselves, their peers and the public. It takes a system of organizational support and professional leadership to support and foster the concept of courage and intervention. We will train your trainers to deliver this program to your agency.

About Editor

John Marx was a Police Officer for twenty-three years and served as a Hostage Negotiator for nineteen of those years. He worked as a patrol officer, media liaison officer, crime prevention officer and burglary detective. Also during his career he served as administrator of his city's Community Oriented Governance initiative through the police department's Community Policing project. Today John combines his skills to consult with businesses about improving both their security and their customer service programs. John retired from law enforcement in 2002. When one of his friends, also a former police officer, committed suicide at age 38, John was devastated and began researching the problems that stress creates for police officers. He decided he needed to do something to help change those problems and he wanted to give something back to the profession that gave him so much. He started a project that has evolved into CopsAlive.com. Put simply, the mission of CopsAlive is to save the lives of those who save lives! CopsAlive.com gathers information, strategies and tools to help law enforcement professionals plan for happy, healthy and successful careers, relationships and lives.
